Madrid City Council and FCC Medio Ambiente awarded for their project using artificial intelligence for visual recognition of waste outside containers

The innovative project for visual recognition of waste on public roads using Artificial Intelligence (AI), developed by FCC Medio Ambiente together with Madrid City Council, has been recognised as one of the best Sustainability Actions of the Year at the Sustainability Day 2025 event, organised by the Custommedia communication group.
José Antonio Martínez Páramo, Councillor for Cleaning and Green Areas at Madrid City Council, and Javier de la Torre Díez, Director of the Madrid branch of FCC Medio Ambiente, attended the award ceremony at the Reina Sofia Museum Auditorium in Madrid, where they received the award. The event was also attended by Ms Olivia Lombraña Bellido, Deputy Director of Cleaning and Equipment at the City Council's Directorate-General for Cleaning and Waste Services, and Daniel Panadero, Global Head of AI at FCC enviro.
With a data feeding device using artificial vision and visual sensors, and the development of algorithms based on AI and machine learning, the award-winning project enables the proactive and automatic detection of waste abandoned next to containers. The project seeks to eradicate a problem that greatly affects the quality of the service, causing sources of dirt, significant aesthetic problems in the urban landscape and numerous complaints from citizens. The programme, designed by the Madrid delegation and the Information Technology department of FCC Medio Ambiente, has been installed in a street cleaning service inspection vehicle in the capital and reduces the average response time for this type of incident by more than 50%.
This project is part of FCC Medio Ambiente's ISO UNE 56001 R&D&I system, certified by AENOR, which since its beginning in 2016 has registered nearly 50 projects and, in the last three years, has involved an investment of €12 million. This award endorses the company's commitment to innovation, a fundamental element of FCC Medio Ambiente's 2050 Sustainability Strategy (ES2050), a business development roadmap that focuses on four main areas of action: Social, Environmental, Excellence and Good Governance.
